Heat, ventilation and age
Roof Replacement on Older Macon Homes.
A lot of Macon is not new construction. Vineville, Ingleside, Shirley Hills and the streets around downtown are full of houses that have been through several roofs already, and the nineties and two-thousands roofs are now due again.
- Heat ages a roof from both sides. Middle Georgia summers cook the shingles from above while an under-ventilated attic bakes them from below. The second half is the part people do not see.
- Ventilation is usually the quiet problem. A roof gets replaced without anyone revisiting the intake and ridge venting, and the new shingles wear out early for the same reason the last set did.
- Storms arrive here already inland. Tropical systems turn up as wind and a lot of rain rather than surge, and wind on an aging roof finds the edges and the ridge first.
- Old decking changes the job. What is under the shingles decides the real scope, and that is a thing to find on an inspection, not halfway through a tear-off.
We look at the attic and the decking as well as the surface, and you get the finding in writing before any work is agreed.

We have an older house. Is that a problem?
It is normal here, and it mostly changes what the inspection looks for. The decking, the flashing and the attic ventilation decide the real scope, so those get checked before a number is written down. One thing worth knowing: if your home sits in a designated historic district, exterior changes can need local review, so check with Macon-Bibb before work is scheduled.
