Humidity, shade and the damp side
Shingle Roofs and Siding in Augusta Humidity.
Summers here are long, warm and wet, and the humidity does not let go overnight. The outside of the house shows it first, and almost always on whichever elevation gets the least sun.
- Those black streaks are algae, not dirt. The dark stripes running down a shingle roof are a blue-green algae that is common right across the humid Southeast. It lives on the mineral filler in asphalt shingles and spreads where the surface stays damp.
- The shaded side goes first. North-facing slopes and walls under tree cover dry slowest after rain, so streaking, mildew on paint and soft trim all turn up there before anywhere else on the house.
- Streaking and a failing roof are two different questions. A streaked roof can have years left and a clean-looking one can be at the end of it. What settles it is the condition of the shingles, the flashing and the decking.
- Algae-resistant shingles are a decision you make once. Most shingle lines offer a version with copper granules blended into the surface. It is worth asking about while the roof is being specified, because it is not something you add later.
- Paint and coating give out on the damp elevation first. A wall that stays wet longer will chalk, blister and hold mildew while the sunny side still looks fine, so the shaded elevations usually set the schedule.
Roofing and exterior painting are two of our four divisions, so the roof and the walls get looked at in the same visit and written into one scope.

Common questions
Augusta Roofing and Remodeling Questions.
The things homeowners here ask before they call.
Augusta is a couple of hours from Atlanta. Do you actually come this far?
Yes. Augusta is one of the markets Elevation serves. It is a straight run east on I-20, and the towns on the way are part of the same area.
Which areas around Augusta do you cover?
Richmond County and Columbia County and the counties around them: Evans, Martinez, Grovetown and Harlem to the west, Hephzibah and Blythe to the south, Thomson and the McDuffie County side out along I-20. Not sure we reach you? Call and ask.
What are the black streaks on my roof?
Algae. It is a blue-green algae that lives on the mineral filler in asphalt shingles, it is common right across the humid Southeast, and it shows up worst on the slopes that stay shaded and damp. On its own it tells you very little about the life left in the roof, which is why the inspection goes by the shingles, the flashing and the decking.
Do you handle exterior painting as well as the roof?
Yes. Exterior painting and coating sit in the same division as siding and gutters, and roofing is a division of the same company, so the roof and the walls can be quoted together as one scope on one schedule.
What happens after I request an estimate?
We call you back, then arrange a time to come and see it. After that visit you get the scope, materials and cost in writing, and the same point of contact stays with the job through to the final walkthrough.
